Smith's Late Goal Lifts Gophers Past Aggies

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - Senior Ben Smith (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) converted a man-advantage opportunity with 40 seconds remaining to lift the Goucher College men's lacrosse team to a 9-8 non-conference victory against Delaware Valley University at James Work Memorial Stadium Wednesday evening.

• Delaware Valley (2-3) got on the board first, scoring 4:52 into the game.
• Smith scored Goucher's (2-5) first goal of the game with 7:11 remaining in the opening quarter.
• After the Aggies reclaimed the lead with just over four minutes left in the quarter, Jack McDermott (Wilmington, Del./The White Mountain School) scored with 3:05 left to tie the game.
• Jacob Morgan (Bowie, Md./Bowie) assisted on the goal.

• DelVal reclaimed the lead just over five minutes into the second.
• Erc Conaway, Jr. (Baltimore, Md./Cristo Rey Jesuit) forged the game's third tie with his unassisted tally 8:50 before intermission.
• The hosts retook the lead with 4:37 left in the half.
• 50 seconds later, McDermott's second goal of the game tied the game 4-4, with Morgan again assisting.
• The game remained deadlocked at halftime.

• Milan Temple (Joppatowne, Md./Concordia Prep) gave Goucher its first lead of the night 4:39 into the second half.
• Delaware Valley scored three times in a span of just over two minutes to take a 7-5 lead with 5:02 left in the third.
• The Aggies carried their two-goal lead into the final period.

• Temple pulled the Gophers within a goal 1:40 into the fourth, with Smith assisting.
• Goucher scored twice on a two-minute Aggie penalty to take an 8-7 lead.
• At the 7:56 mark, Sean Nolan (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran) scored his first career goal to tie the game 7-7, with Theo Cook IV (Edgewood, Md./Edgewood) assisting.
• 37 seconds later, Temple scored his third goal of the game to put Goucher up 8-7.  Morgan recorded his third assist of the night.
• Chris Marren scored for DelVal with 5:44 remaining to tie the game 8-8.
• Delaware Valley was whistled for two flags with 1:42 remaining, putting Goucher in a 6-on-4 for 30 seconds and a man-advantage for a minute.
• With the man-advantage, Smith scored with 40 seconds left on an unsettled situation following a loose ball, with Cook assisting.
• Conaway won the ensuing faceoff and the Gophers ran out the clock to seal the win.

• Goucher outshot Delaware Valley 35-27 and won 13 of the game's 20 faceoffs, with Conaway going 11-14 at the dot.
• Temple recorded a hat trick for the second straight game, while McDermott and Smith each scored twice.
• Morgan's three assists were a career high.
• Nolan and Kyle Ramos (Bethesda, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) each had two caused turnovers for the Gophers, with Conaway picking up eight ground balls.
• Nick Gambone (Norristown, Pa./LaSalle College) added three ground balls.
