GRANTHAM, Pa. - All three goals Goucher scored in the second half today reduced a two-goal deficit down to one. But Cortland also had an effective response for each of the Gophers' goals and, as a result, the Red Dragons were able to defeat head coach Gary Dunda's troops, 5-3, at the Messiah College Soccer Classic.
Just 4:26 into the second half, the Gophers (2-2) got on the scoreboard for the first time on a goal by Travis Boland (Athol, MA/Ralph C. Mahar). Boland's goal, which was assisted by Julien Greco (Shutesbury, MA/St. George's School) knocked a 2-0 advantage Cortland achieved thanks for goals in the first half by Bryan Peterson and Kyle Stepanovsky, down to 2-1.
Stepanovsky restored Cortland's lead to two goals when he scored again at 57:15, but Boland answered with an unassisted goal just :11 later to make the score 3-2 in favor of the Red Dragons (3-1).
Three goals were scored in the final eight minutes of the contest. At 83:59, an unassisted goal by David Jacques provided Cortland with a 4-2 lead, but the Gophers again closed to within one when Adam Wilkinson (West Grove, PA/Avon Grove) banged in his first goal of the season off an assist from Galen Guindon (Wallingford, PA/Friends Central). The final goal of the contest was scored with only :32 remaining and it also belonged to Jacques.
The Red Dragons finished with a 16-11 edge in shots.
