STEVENSON, Md. – Goucher got off four shots during the first 10-minute overtime in today's game against Stevenson, but not one of them generated the goal that would have snapped the 2-2 tie and provided the Gophers with an immediate victory.
In the second OT, however, it only took one shot to ignite a wild celebration by the visiting team. That shot – a header by sophomore forward Andrew Bull (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) – produced the goal at 102:22 that propelled head coach Gary Dunda's Gophers to a 3-2 non-conference triumph over the Mustangs (2-5-1).
Bull's game-winning goal was his team-leading fourth of the season and was set up by a perfect cross from Tom Gray (Hampstead, Md./North Carroll), one of three freshman who earned special praise from Dunda following the game.
"I was very pleased with the play of three freshmen in particular," said Dunda, identifying them as Gray, Adam Boyce (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Emmet Sellars (Caldwell, N.J./Caldwell). "Each one of them played at a higher level today than they have until now. Tommy Gray, for example, showed tremendous poise in crossing the ball to Andrew for the game-winning goal."
Boyce was awarded an assist on a goal by Jay Berger (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) at 80:23 to created a 2-2 tie.
The only scoring in the opening half was a successful penalty kick by Tim McMullen (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) at 19:50 that put the Gophers (4-3) in the lead, 1-0.
The Mustangs drew even on an unassisted goal by Jake Stocksdale at 68:42 and then went ahead 2-1 when Stocksdale scored again at 74:05.
"I was very proud of the effort of the entire team today," commented Dunda. "We demonsrated what can happen when a team comes together and battles as hard as it possibly can when it's down 2-1."
