MIDDLETOWN, Pa. — A successful penalty kick by junior midfielder Tate Becker (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) in the 56th minute got Goucher on the scoreboard first in today's non-conference contest against Penn St.-Harrisburg.
But with the Gophers less than eight minutes away from their second victory of the young season — and freshman goalkeeper Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) from the first shutout of his collegiate career — the Lions drew even on an unassisted goal by Chase Vilga at 82:18. When neither team scored to break the tie in the time remaining in regulation or either of the two 10-minute overtime periods, the game was officially declared a 1-1 draw.
The two starting goalkeepers made a combined total of eight saves to keep the contest scoreless through the first 45 minutes. Hendry was tested in the opening minute, but managed to stop a shot by Jonathan Majin. He made four additional saves in the first half, one more in the second half and then his seventh and final one just 18 seconds into the second OT.
Brandon Hoover went the distance in goal for Penn St.-Harrisburg and all three of the saves for which he was credited were in the first half.
The only shot by either team in the first OT was by Goucher's Marco Grotti (Milmay, N.J./Millville), but the senior midfielder was wide with his offering.
The Lions (1-1-1) got off four shots in the second OT and ended the contest with a 19-12 advantage.
The Gophers (1-1-1) head north of the Mason-Dixon Line again for their next scheduled contest, which is against Gettysburg on Saturday at 4 p.m.
