Scranton loss ends Goucher’s playoff dreams
Goucher moves to 6-5-5 after a 5-1 loss away from home against Scranton University.
SCRANTON, PA. - Goucher moves to 6-5-5 after a 5-1 loss away from home against the University of Scranton. Junior Scott Mt. Pleasant (Clifton Park, NY) scored a penalty kick in the 49th minute, his third of the season.
The Gophers had an impressive first half, they took five shots and created opportunities from set pieces. Freshman Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, CA) forced Scranton goalkeeper Eric Hintz into a fine save while junior Drew Phillips (Hoosick Falls, NY) hit the ball just over the bar from a free kick. Just as Goucher got a foothold into the game, Scranton’s Johnathan Roberts scored from the right side with 15 minutes to play in the first half.
At half time, Goucher had to regroup and recover after a tough first half. Scranton doubled their lead nearly three minutes into the second half. Michael Bergen scored after Goucher failed to clear the ball after an opposing corner kick. The Gophers would not be down long as senior captain Evan Phillips (Hoosick Falls, NY) found Cohen off a free kick. Cohen was taken down in the box and Mt. Pleasant stepped up and scored almost a minute later.
The game heated up as the Royals and the Gophers traded possession. Both teams were kept on their toes as Goucher was hoping for an equalizer. Unfortunately, it would never come. After a tough corner kick in the 74th minute, Scranton recovered the ball and scored making the game 3-1 with 16 minutes to play. Scranton would score two more times as Goucher became more and more desperate to score a goal.
Goucher Goalkeeper Dan Hendry praised his team’s effort after the game: “First half, I thought we dominated. They got a lucky break, but for the most part we had them on their heels. It was tough, we came back and found a way to score, just after we conceded. The score doesn’t show how hard we played for most of the game.”
Goucher hopes to improve their record from 6-5-5 with their next game home against Eastern on Tuesday at 7pm. The Gophers hope to keep their unbeaten home record in their last nonconference game of the season.
