Goucher beats Catholic, Remains Unbeaten at Home

BALTIMORE, MD. - Goucher moved to 6-2-4 (1-1-1 Landmark Conference) on the year as they beat Catholic University 2-0 tonight at Beldon Field. The win was Goucher’s first against Catholic since 2007, and it vaulted into a top 4 position in the Landmark Conference – and continued their impressive home form. The Gophers have not lost at home since late October of 2015, posting a 4-0-2 record at home this year.
Goucher kept their formation that brought them success against Susquehanna last Saturday and it paid off early. Sophomore Mario Murcia (Akron, PA) found freshmen Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, CA) just outside the box at the 14:30 mark of the first half. After a nifty move to free himself, Cohen’s effort found its way past the Catholic goalkeeper to give the Gophers an early 1-0 lead which they would not relinquish. The goal also brought Cohen’s total to eight on the season making him Goucher’s top goal scorer since 2010.
The second half saw a significant step up in the intensity level as both teams took six shots. Twenty-five minutes into the second half freshman Moibanda Rogers (Leicester, England) bombed down the left flank, sent in a cross, and found Sophomore Sam Capalbo (Wallingford, PA) who smashed in the first goal of his Gopher career. Later, the Gophers caught Catholic on a counterattack and Cohen found Capalbo to put him on goal but he was denied by a great save by the Catholic goalkeeper. As Catholic continued to push forward, the Gophers sustained the late pressure from the Cardinals behind a strong performance by the back four and sophomore goalkeeper Dan Hendry (Lewisburg, PA) who made three saves.
“It was a great team performance and a great defensive effort these past two games. It is absolutely incredible beating Catholic after such a long time,” Junior Drew Phillips (Hoosick Falls, NY) said after the game.
Goucher currently sits in a tie for third place with four points in the Landmark Conference. The Gophers look to add another conference win this Saturday as they host Moravian at 3:30pm on Beldon Field.
