Late Kraus Goal Keeps Unbeaten Home Record
The Goucher men’s soccer team moved to 6-2-5 with a 1-1 tie against Moravian College at home today.
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Goucher men’s soccer team moved to 6-2-5 with a 1-1 tie against Moravian College at home today. Despite dominating nearly every aspect of the game, the Gophers had to wait till the last 30 seconds of the game to score. Freshman Dalton Kraus (Aberdeen, MD) scored off an assist from fellow freshman Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, CA) with 25 seconds remaining to tie the game at 1-1. This marked the eighth time the Gophers have scored beyond the 80th minute this season. By virtue of the late goal, the team was forced into overtime for the sixth time this season.
The first half began conservatively for Goucher as both teams felt each other out and traded possession. Cohen was able to find himself in dangerous positions early in the first half and nearly scored as he forced visiting goalkeeper Bryan Yaskowski into a good save. The half ended in a 0-0 tie. Motivated to win the game, Goucher stepped up the pressure in the second half and registered ten shots, the most in a half since their 4-0 win against Gwynedd Mercy. Moravian’s William Demmel was able to score in the 64th minute off a free kick. Down 1-0, Goucher continued to attack, creating most of their chances off of corner kicks. The Gophers registered nine corner kicks in the second half, the most in any game played this season. In what seemed like the last kick of the game, Cohen sent in a corner that found Kraus to score with less than 30 seconds left, tying the game at 1-1.
Kraus’ goal allowed the Gophers to go into overtime for the sixth time this season. Goucher attacked mostly from free kicks as they sustained 27 fouls, the most in any game this season. The Gophers controlled much of the game, but had to rely on Sophomore goalkeeper Dan Hendry (Lewisburg, PA) when he made a huge breakaway save late in the second overtime to preserve the tie.
The Gophers return to action against Washington College on Wednesday October 12th at 4:00 PM in Chestertown, MD.
