Men's Soccer Falls in OT Thriller
Goucher College men's soccer (0-2-0, Landmark 0-0-0) fell in its home opener versus Mount Aloysius, 2-1, on Sunday.
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College men's soccer (0-2-0, Landmark 0-0-0) fell in its home opener versus Mount Aloysius, 2-1, on Sunday.
The Gophers were putting pressure on the Mounties early, notching three shots on goal in the first 20 minutes.
Goucher junior, Mario Murcia (Akron, Pa.), broke the silence when he rifled a free kick from the flank through the box and passed a diving keeper – giving the Gophers a one to nil lead.
The Mounties' knotted up the score, 1-1, half way through the second half, with a header from junior Christopher Godet's after a cross from junior Joshua Devlin in the 70th minute.
Five minutes later, the Mounties committed a foul in the box, rewarding Goucher with a penalty kick opportunity. However, James Eyre of Mount Aloysius made a diving save to parry the ball to safety and stalled the game, 1-1. Immediately following the PK, the Gophers nearly earned the advantage a headed ball off a corner.
The Gophers continued to blaze shots in the direction of the goal for the remainder of regulation but were unable to put another shot on goal. The game moved into overtime, deadlocked 1-1.
Goucher exposed the Mounties in the 95th minute when sophomore Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif.) nearly found pay dirt, but Eyre tipped the ball away. Mount Aloysius countered only two minutes later to earn the victory on a one-on-one opportunity.
Junior goalkeeper Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa.) made seven saves out of the nine that came his way.
Goucher had more scoring opportunities in the match holding a 13-9 advantage in shots on goal.
The men are back in action on Wednesday at Beldon Field v against Cairn at 7 p.m.
