GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Goucher College men's soccer team (2-2, Landmark 0-0) doubled its total wins on Friday evening, defeating Gwynedd Mercy, 1-0, on the road.
Sophomore William Jenkins (Fairfield, Pa.) scored his first goal at Goucher with 8:14 left in the first half following a scrum in the box. First-year Matt Gilley (Baltimore, Md.) was credited with an assist on the play. Both players earned their first points while wearing the blue & gold on the goal.
The start of the game was very slow going, as neither team put a shot on goal until the 24th minute. The Griffins were the first to threaten, but junior Daniel Hendry (Lewisburg, Pa.) was quick to wipe away the chance to defend his second consecutive clean sheet. He would not be challenged the remainder of the game.
Goucher did not manage to put a shot on goal until Jenkins' header found the back of the net prior to half time. He went on to add another shot on goal with 1:27 left on the clock in the half. Goucher maintained the 1-0 advantage into the intermission.
The Gophers were unable to find the back of the net in the second half but threatened with a barrage of shots on goal in the final 3:17 of the game. Junior Konrad Bulanowski (Philadelphia, Pa.) and first-years Zach Brumbalow (Eldersburg, Md.) and Vinay Chandra (Clarksville, Md.) were in on the attempts but were turned away.
The Griffins attempted to knot the game up with 45 seconds left on the clock, but they were unable to mount a shot on goal following a corner kick. Goucher sealed its second consecutive win, 1-0.
The Gophers held an advantage in shots (9-7) and shots on goal (7-1) while Gwynedd Mercy had an advantage in corner kicks (6-4).
Goucher looks to continue its winning streak tomorrow, playing host to Rosemont College at 4 p.m. on Beldon Field.
