Dever, Odubade Score in Gophers Conference Opener

TOWSON, Md. - Xavier Dever (Hollywood, Md./Leonardtown) and Jeremiah Odubade (Capital Heights, Md./Fairmont Heights) each scored goals for the Goucher College men's soccer team as the Gophers were downed 4-2 by visiting Elizabethtown College in the Landmark Conference opener for both schools Saturday afternoon at Beldon Field.
- Elizabethtown (5-1-1, 1-0 Landmark) took a 1-0 lead just past the 10-minute mark as Ryan Hepler scored.
- Ali Kazim Nakhid (Beirut, Lebanon/UMBC) and Jonathan Alvarado (Hyattsville, Md./International HS at Langley Park) each put shots on goal just past the 20-minute mark for Goucher (3-5-1, 0-1) that were saved by Blue Jay keeper Kelvin Delcid.
- In the 28th minute, the Gophers tied the game as Dever took a through ball from Bobby Beringer (Okinawa, Japan/Richard Montgomery), deked an Etown defender and beat a sliding Delcid to the far left post to tie the game 1-1.
- Etown responded with just under 11 minutes remaining in the half as Dylan Hairfield scored with Luke Kelly assisting.
- Goucher keeper Jeff Castro (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) made a save on a shot by the Blue Jays in the 38th minute.
- Etown put its first shot on goal of the second half just over six minutes in.
- Nakhid had a shot blocked by a Blue Jay defender in the 58th minute.
- Pedro Guizardi extended the Elizabethtown lead to 3-1 with just over 29 minutes remaining.
- In the 69th minute, Tyler Wagner scored for the Blue Jays as they took a 4-1 lead.
- Dever put a header on frame at the 76:35 mark that was saved by Delcid.
- Nakhid and Nick Haines (Taneytown, Md./Francis Scott Key) put shots on goal for Goucher but both were stopped by Delcid.
- Odubade one-timed a pass from Nakhid from 10 yards out top shelf with 1:06 remaining to cut the Blue Jay advantage to 4-2.
- Elizabethtown held a 21-12 shot advantage on the afternoon.
- Castro made four saves for Goucher, while the Gophers also had a pair of team saves.
- Delcid recorded five stops for Etown.
- Odubade had his team-leading fifth goal of the season, while Dever's tally was his second of the 2021 campaign.
- Odubade, Dever and Nakhid each had three shots.
- Goucher returns to action Tuesday night, hosting Lancaster Bible at 7 pm at Beldon Field.
