Gophers Battle Regionally-Ranked Drew to 1-1 Tie

TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College and Drew University battled to a 1-1 tie in the Landmark Conference men's soccer opener for both teams. Each team scored late in the first half.
- Jonathan Alvarado (Hyattsville, Md. / International HS at Langley Park) put a shot on goal for Goucher (4-1-3, 0-0-1 Landmark) 20 seconds into the game.
- Alvarado had another shot on goal in the 16th minute that was saved by Drew (8-0-1, 0-0-1) goalie Calum Erlenborm.
- Jeremiah Odubade (Capital Heights, Md. / Fairmont Heights) put a shot on frame for the Gophers just past the midway point.
- The Rangers had their first shot on goal in the 26th minute with Ale Sternini (Rome, Italy / Williston Northampton) making the save.
- Ali Kazim Nakhid (Beirut, Lebanon/UMBC) put Goucher in front 1-0 in the 30th minute. A long throw in from Yaya Diabagate (Capital Heights, Md. / Fairmont Heights) went off the head of Abou Makine (Baltimore, Md. / Patterson High School) and to Nakhid who scored his sixth goal of the season.
- Drew scored with just over a minute remaining on a goal by Tino Puentes to make it 1-1.
- Drew pushed a paif of shots high in the first five minutes of the second half.
- Alvarado had another shot on goal just under 10 minutes in that was saved by Erlemborm.
- Sternini made a save on a header bid by Thomas Zurkowski with eight minutes left.
- Drew's final shot of the game, another header, was saved by Sternini with five minutes to go.
- Drew held a slight 11-9 edge in shots and took seven corner kicks to Goucher's three.
- Erlenborm made five saves for the Rangers, while Sternini turned aside three shots.
- Alvarado and Odubade took three shots apiece.
- The Rangers entered the game unbeaten and ranked No. 6 in the United Soccer Coaches Region V regional ranking.

- The Gophers return home on Wednesday, October 5, when they welcome No. 6 Johns Hopkins for a 7:00 game at Beldon Field.
