TOWSON, Md. – Sisley Pumilia (Chesterfield, N.H./Keene) tallied her team-leading ninth goal of the season today at Beldon Field as Goucher earned a 1-0 victory over Washington (Md.).
Sarah Lodge (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown) was awarded an assist on Pumilia's goal, which was scored at 30:49 of the first half. Lodge flipped a ball forward to Pumilia, who made a touch and then solidly struck the ball.
Pumilia has scored at least one goal in four of the Gophers' five games so far this season.
"Technically and tactically, it may not have been our best effort of the season," according to Goucher head coach Tati Korba. "But I think we gritted it out, showed some character. It's nice to see the players get rewarded with a win when they put in the effort."
The Shorewomen (0-5) finished with a 12-7 advantage in shots, but sophomore goalkeeper Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) registered the shutout by making eight saves. It was Matthews' third shutout of the season and sixth of her career, which ties her with Chris Simone (1993-94) and Lauren Pozsonyi (1995) for the second-most career shutouts in the history of Goucher's women's soccer program.
