LANCASTER, Pa. – One reason Goucher is off to its best start since 1995 is that Sisley Pumilia (Chesterfield, N.H./Keene) is scoring a lot of goals. Another is that Kellen Matthews (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin Regional) isn't giving many up.
Pumilia and Matthews were both at it again today, helping the Gophers (4-2) defeat Lancaster Bible, 2-0.
Pumilia tallied both goals today, the first at 67:02 and the second at 79:19. The sophomore midfielder/forward leads the team in goals this season with 11 and has scored at least one goal in five of the six games the Gophers have played.
McKenna Wilkinson (Keene, N.H./Keene) was awarded an assist on Pumilia's first goal.
Matthews earned her fourth shutout of the season. She faced a total of 10 shots and had to turn away six of them to keep the Chargers (5-3) from getting on the scoreboard.
Including the three shutouts she engineered last season as a freshman, Matthews now ranks second in career shutouts in the history of Goucher's women's soccer program. Her seven leave her only one away from the all-time leader, Tara Haag (2001-03).
The four wins is the most the Gophers have achieved during the first six games of a season since they also started out 4-2 in 1995.
