October 30, 2008
TOWSON, Md. – Sisley Pumilia (Spofford, N.H./Keene) tallied her 23rd goal of the season and picked up assists on goals by Kanika Staten (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) and Debbie Cohen (Austin, Texas/Lasa) as Goucher unleashed a total of 16 shots and defeated Notre Dame (Md.), 3-1, today.
Staten's goal at 35:04 stood up as the only score of the opening period, but the Gophers (7-9-1) assumed a 2-0 lead in the 57th minute on Pumilia's goal, which was set up by Joanna Parmer (Petaluma, Calif./Sonoma Academy).
The Cohen-from-Pumilia goal at 75:37 provided the Gophers with a 3-0 advantage, but the Gators (5-13) avoided being shut out for a fourth consecutive game when their only shot of the contest turned into a goal by Stephani Jones with only 2:23 left to play.
"If you consider the number of outstanding individual accomplishments and team performances that have taken place this season, I think there's a clear indication that we're headed in the right direction and need only a few more pieces of the puzzle to develop into a consistently strong program," head coach Tati Korba stated after the game. "I think we can be very proud of how far we've come this season, but at the same time we have to realize that we still have some catching up to do."
With a win over Juniata on Saturday, the Gophers would finish with eight victories in a season for the first time since 2003.
