BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Goucher's best result against Moravian during the first eight years of the Landmark Conference was a 3-3 draw in 2013. A few of the seven losses were rather one-sided, like the 9-1 final back in 2007.
The Gophers have, however, showed signs of gaining ground on the Greyhounds. For example, each of their last two losses were by one goal, and one of those contests went into overtime.
After today, it can be said that Goucher has caught up with Moravian. One goal again separated the two teams, but this time it was head coach Tati Korba's squad which came out on top, 1-0.
Following a scoreless first half, the first scoring chance of the second period presented itself almost immediately in the form of a penalty kick awarded to the Greyhounds (2-4-1, 0-1 Landmark) for a foul by the Gophers in the box. Brittney Peter was selected to take the attempt, which was denied by Juliana Harkavy (Memphis, Tenn./Ridgeway), who played all 90 minutes in goal for Goucher.
Harkavy deflected the ball back into the field of play toward Peter, who got off another shot that went wide.
The scoreless tie lasted for another 30 minutes before Samantha Turner (Vineland, N.J./Vineland) got off a high shot that the opposing goalie couldn't reach and the ball settled in the back of the goal. The time of the unassisted goal was 76:51.
Harkavy had to make one more save in the time that remained to earn her fourth shutout of the season and 18th of her four seasons at Goucher. She senior finished with five saves.
Her counterpart in goal, Jacqueline Zalis, didn't make her first save until she turned away an attempt by Gaby Davis (New York, N.Y./LaGuardia) in the 82 minute.
"That game was a battle for both teams," Korba said after it was over. "We knew it was going to take a total team effort today against a good Moravian side and that is just what we got from everyone. Juliana Harkavy came up huge with a save on their PK and Sam Turner took a great shot for the game-winning goal.
"We are excited to get conference play going with a good team win."
Goucher begins a four-game home stand on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against McDaniel.
