Sept. 10 – TOWSON, Md. – Not even the heat could slow down the Goucher College women's soccer team, as the Gophers put together a solid team effort in an 8-0 win over Cairn University on Saturday afternoon.
The game lasted just over 70 minutes and was called due to the heat index reaching over 100 degrees at Beldon Field on the day. However, that was more than enough time for the Gopher offense to put 15 shots on net, with eight finding their target.
Senior Sam Turner continued her dominate performance, tallying her first-career hat trick. She needed just six shots to post her trio of goals, putting four on net.
Turner tallied the first of her three goals in just the second minute of action. Already leading 1-0, thanks to a goal at the 40-second mark by Theresa Antkowiak-Tassone, the Gophers extended their lead less than a minute later when Antkowiak-Tassone found Turner for the goal.
Antkowiak-Tassone played a part in all three of the Gophers' first three scores as she then found Stephanie Budrock in the 36th minute for Budrock's second goal of the season and 12th of her career.
The final tally of the first half was scored by Sasha Jimenez with just three minutes remaining in the stanza. Budrock assisted on the Jimenez goal, which gave the Gophers a 4-0 lead heading into the break.
Goucher kept the majority of the possession throughout the opening stanza, outshooting the Highlanders by a total of 14-0 in the half.
Turner wasted little time in finishing off her first-career hat trick, scoring the first two tallies in the second half in the 49th and 53rd minutes. The first goal came on an assist by Alexa Stewart, while the second was assisted by Isabel Suazo.
The scoring was rounded out with both Budrock and Jimenez posting their second goals of the game. Budrock's was scored in the 61st minute, unassisted, before finding Jimenez for the second time in the 64th.
Offensively, Turner has been on a tear through the first four games of the season. The senior has already surpassed her career high in total goals, having scored six total. She has tallied five goals and ten total points in the team's last two games and now leads the Landmark with 12 total points.
Both Jimenez and Budrock finished the game with a pair of goals. Budrock, like Turner, finished the game with a career-high, tallying six total points in the game. She now leads the conference in assists and ranks fifth in points.
Defensively, the Gophers held Cairn without a shot through the entirety of the match, marking the first time since Sept. 12, 2006 against Trinity (D.C.).
The Goucher women's soccer team will be back in action on Wednesday, September 14 as they travel to Chestertown, Md. to take on Washington College. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
