TOWSON, Md. -- Goucher College women's soccer team (3-0-1, Landmark 0-0-0) beat the Eastern Eagles via a dramatic goal by junior Camryn Mackey (Washington, D.C.) with 1:30 left on the clock.
The Gophers jumped out to an early lead with a goal from Mackey in the 22nd minute. Goucher allowed only one shot on goal for the remainder of the half.
Eastern came out of the intermission strong and scored two quick goals to snag the lead from the Gophers. However, the Goucher knotted the game up when first-year Syd Benedick (Fort Loudon, Pa.) sent a high corner kick into the box. Sophomore Isabel Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) tracked the ball down and headed it into the net.
Goucher threatened in the 75th minute to score again but was turned away. The Eagles attempted to break the tie only two minutes later, but first-year goalkeeper Christina Charikofsky (Eldersburg, Pa.) turned the opportunity away.
In the 89th minute, junior Christia Yarrish (Hummelstown, Pa.) sent a long through ball to Mackey who corralled the strike, dodged two defenders dribbled around the keeper to win the game in exciting fashion.
Charikofsky led the Gophers with nine saves.
The Gophers are in action again on Tuesday when they play host to Wesley College at 7 p.m.
