TOWSON, Md. – The Goucher College women's soccer team (4-3-2, Landmark 0-1-0) took down the McDaniel College Green Terror, 1-0, at home on Tuesday evening at Beldon Field.
Junior Sara Naughton scored her first career goal at Goucher to give the Gophers their fourth win of the season, and first win over McDaniel since 2013, 1-0.
The Gophers handled the#8 regionally ranked Green Terror in Towson, Md. following a game in which McDaniel defeated the #6 nationally ranked team, Swarthmore, 4-3, on Saturday. The Green Terror had won seven consecutive games coming into the matchup, having only lost to #4 nationally ranked, William Smith, in their season opener, 5-0.
The game began with both teams prodding at the opposing defenses without any positive outcome. Finally, the Green Terror broke through and put a shot on goal in the 22nd minute of the game. However, first-year Christina Charikofsky (Eldersburg, Md.) cut off the shot for her first save of the game. She would go on to collect a total of six saves in the contest.
Neither team put another shot on goal for the remainder of the half, as both squads went back to their respective benches tied, 0-0.
McDaniel threatened twice at the start of the second half, but Charikofsky denied the chances for the Gophers. Goucher finally put its first shot on goal in the 56th minute when Isabel Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ripped a shot from the wing that was saved by opposing keeper, Sydney Kelly. Junior Theresa Antkowiak-Tassone (Towson, Md.) added another shot on goal only minutes later but was also denied.
Ultimately, Naughton was the finisher the Gophers were looking for in the 85th minute. Following a corner kick sent in by first-year Alyssa Hodnik (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Naughton settled a loose ball outside the eighteen, squared it up, and ripped a shot from 25 yards out over the head of the Green Terror's keeper.
McDaniel scurried in the final minutes in an attempt to find the back of the net, but an offside play iced the game for the Gophers, 1-0.
Charikofsky earned her second career shutout for the Gophers. McDaniel held an advantage in shots (15-5), shots on goal (6-3) and corner kicks (10-3).
The Gophers return to conference play on Saturday when they travel to Susquehanna to take on the Riverhawks at 4:30 p.m.
