TOWSON, Md. - Not even an almost two-hour weather delay could stop the Goucher College women's soccer team on Friday evening in their 2018 season opener against Gwynedd Mercy, as the Gophers washed away the visiting Griffins, 3-0, at Beldon Field.
With ominous clouds hanging over Beldon Field throughout the first half, Goucher stuck early and often, taking a 2-0 lead into intermission.
First, in the 14th minute, senior Christina Yarrish (Hummelstown, Pa.) took a pass from fellow senior Camryn Mackey (Washington, D.C.) from about 20 yards out and lifted a shot right over the top of the Gwynedd Mercy goalie into the back of the net to give the Gophers an early 1-0. Edge.
The Gopher's second goal of the period came in the 32nd minute as sophomore Syd Benedick (Fort Loudon, Pa.) lined up a corner kick. Benedick's corner kick found Yarrish in the box, who quickly passed off to junior Gracie LeFevre (Glenwood, Md.) who finished a chance from a few yards out to give Goucher the brace at 2-0.
After a dominant half that saw Goucher outshoot Gwynedd Mercy 10-3, the teams headed for intermission. There, the skies opened, sending down a torrential thunderstorm that caused an almost two-hour weather delay.
Once the teams finally came back out to start the second half, it was more of the same. The third goal of the night came in the 57th minute, as senior Theresa Antkowiak-Tassone (Towson, Md.) scored from 25 yards out, unassisted, to give the Gophers an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
