TOWSON, Md. - On a hot day at Beldon Field, the Goucher College women's soccer team rallied back from a late 1-0 deficit to take a 2-1 victory over Lycoming on Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, the Gophers improved to 2-0 overall, while Lycoming fell to 0-3 with the defeat.
In the opening half, Lycoming was first to strike, as the Warriors scored two minutes into the contest to take a 1-0 lead on the Gophers. The rest of the period saw Goucher control play, as the Gophers held a sizable 11-3 edge on shots.
However, the Lycoming defense was relentless, making four saves in the period to keep Goucher off the board. In the second half, it was more of the same, with Goucher controlling play, only to not score.
That all changed in the 73rd minute, as junior Gracie LeFevre (Glenwood, Md.) converted on a chance from sophomore Syd Benedick (Fort Loudon, Pa.) to tie the match up at 1-all. For LaFevre, it was her second goal in as many matches for Goucher, while Benedick's assist was her second of the year, as well.
Six minutes later, the Gophers took the lead for good, as senior Christina Yarrish (Hummelstown, Pa.) scored on a penalty kick after a Lycoming penalty in the box to give Goucher a one-score lead they would not give up the rest of the match. For Yarish, it was her second goal in as many matches and her fourth game-winner of her career.
From there, Goucher held on, as goalie Erica Bulzomi (Syosset, N.Y.) made three saves in net throughout the second half to keep Lycoming off the board and preserve the win.
Overall, Goucher held a sizable edge on shots (22-7) and corner kicks (12-2) in the victory, as well.
The Goucher College women's soccer team returns to action on Thursday, traveling to Shenandoah. Things get underway at 7 p.m.
