FREDERICA, Del. - Senior Camryn Mackey (Washington, D.C.) of the Goucher College women's soccer team scored the game-winner six minutes into overtime, lifting the visiting Gophers to a 3-2 victory on the road at Wesley on Tuesday night.
With the win, Goucher evened their record on the year to 3-3-2 overall, while Wesley fell to 4-2-1 with the defeat.
In the match, all of the scoring in regulation occurred in the second half, as the match went into intermission scoreless. In the opening frame, sophomore goalie Christina Charikofsky (Eldersburg, Md.) was great, making six saves in the first 45 minutes to keep Wesley off the board.
As the match crept into the second half, the Gophers struck, scoring a pair of goals within six minutes of each other to take a 2-0 lead.
First, in the 64th minute, first-year Lily Shaffer (Lititz, Pa.) picked the right time to score her first career goal, as the unassisted tally gave the Gophers a 1-0 lead. Then, in the 70th minute, sophomore Kendall Belmont (Portland, Ore.) scored her first career goal to put Goucher up, 2-0. Senior Christina Yarrish (Hummelstown, Pa.) was credited with an assist on Belmont's score.
Up 2-0, the Gophers looked to finish the game off over the final 20 minutes of regulation. But, Wesley had other plans, as the host Wolverines scored in the 82nd minute to slice the Gopher lead down to 2-1, then tallied the equalizer with 49 seconds left to tie it at 2-2 and send it to overtime.
Despite giving up the two-goal lead so late in the match, the Gophers picked themselves up off the mat and attacked back in overtime. The first shot of the frame was taken by Mackey just 40 seconds in, then in the 96th minute, Mackey didn't miss on her second scoring chance of extra time, burying an opportunity to give the Gophers the thrilling win.
For Mackey, the goal was her first of the year and the sixth of her career at Goucher. Yarrish had a hand in Mackey's goal, as well, pushing her assist total on the year to three for the year and nine for her Goucher career.
Overall in the victory, both Goucher and Wesley fired 14 shots, apiece, on the evening, while Wesley had a sizeable 10-4 edge on corner kicks. In net, Charikofsky ended the night making nine saves.
The Goucher College women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, as they dive back into Landmark Conference play at Scranton Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
