BALTIMORE, MD - The Goucher College Gophers (1-5 overall) hosted the Alvernia University Golden Wolves (1-2-2 overall) on Saturday afternoon. Despite the strong defensive efforts, two second half goals propelled the Golden Wolves over the Gophers, 2-1.
Alvernia began the game with an early attack, notching a header shot on target, requiring sophomore, Nia George, to make a save just 1:10 into the competition. However, Goucher came rallying back, with a shot on target two-and-a-half minutes later from Madison Ybarra. The remainder of the half was all Golden Wolves, recording 11 shots in just the first half, with George adding nine saves. The first half ended scoreless, 0-0.
Alvernia's offensive efforts came to fruition, just under eight minutes into the half, giving them the 1-0 lead. The Golden Wolves did not let up after that, getting six more shots against the Gophers, until they found the back of the net at at the 80:44 mark.
Goucher did not back down, despite the 2-0 lead from their opponents. In the 89th minute of the game, two seniors took charge with Jordan Wood connecting with Becca Maddox to give the Gophers a goal.
The Golden Wolves outshot the Gophers 22-5, splitting their shots evenly each half. George recorded a total of 14 saves in her 90 mintues of play. Alvernia earned three corner kicks, compared to Goucher's one.
Goucher will begin their extended road trip, beginning their trip at Eastern for a 2:30pm kickoff on Saturday, September 20th. They do not reutrn home until Saturday, October 4th for Blue & Gold Weekend, where they face Scranton in the first game of the doubleheader.
