TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore Ali Tomasevich (Harleysville, Pa.) and junior Leo Sementilli (Ellicott City, Md.) have been named the Goucher College Athletes of the Week following their performances for their respective teams.
Tomasevich was a key part of the women’s tennis teams’ win over Landmark Conference opponent, Juniata, on Friday. She was a key cog that helped the Gophers jump out to a 2-1 lead following doubles play. Pairing up with senior Amber Penaloza (Damascus, Md.), the duo toppled Souyma Polavarapu and Devin Ryman 8-1 at No. 3 singles.
Tomasevich continued on to dominate Kelley Appow 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Over the course of the season, she won seven singles and seven doubles matches. In her two-year career at Goucher, she has won a total of 22 matches, including 12 wins in singles play.
With their win over Juniata, the Goucher women’s tennis team finished sixth in the conference for the 2016-17 season. The last time the Gophers finished sixth in Landmark play was the 2014-15 season when they posted a 1-6 record.
Sementilli is earning his first Goucher College Athlete of the Week honors following a four-point game for the Gophers. The attackman from Ellicott City, Md. found the back of the net twice and dished out two assists to teammates in a 9-5 win over Landmark rival, Moravian.
During his third year playing for the blue and gold, Sementilli scored 11 goals and added seven dimes for the Gophers. He also chipped in with eight ground balls and one caused turnover.
With their second conference win of the 2017 season, the Gophers finished fifth overall – improving on their sixth place finish last season.
Three of the four Goucher losses in Landmark Conference play came by two goals or less, including two overtime losses. Scranton had the largest win over the Gophers in Landmark play, 8-4, in the conference opener. Goucher’s conference wins came handily, 10-4 and 9-5 over Susquehanna and Moravian, respectfully.
