Fujitani Adds Landmark Senior Scholar Athlete Award to 2017 Accolades

Senior Midori Fujitani (Tokyo, Japan) has been selected as the Landmark Conference Men's Tennis Senior Scholar Athlete for the 2017 season. He is the third Gopher to earn the honor in the last two years, joining 2016 recipients, Seth Hoesman and Morgan Richter.

Fujitani moves on from Goucher College with the most singles wins and team doubles wins in school history. During the 2017 season, he earned his 62^nd win for Goucher, sealing a key match against Drew at home, 5-4. He then continued on to win two more matches, bringing his career total to 64, which ranks second all-time in Landmark Conference history.

He also paired up with teammate Jack Hodges (London, England) to win 39 doubles matches as a team at Goucher.  Fujitani won 47 doubles matches in total.

In addition to being a stellar athlete, Fujitani adds the student to student-athlete in a profound way. During his four-year career at Goucher, he maintained a 3.62 GPA as an international relations major. He has also found a position on the Landmark Conference Academic Honor roll all three years he was eligible.

During his time at Goucher, Fujitani has raked in the accolades including a Landmark Conference Doubles First Team honor in 2016 and Second Team Doubles honors during the 2015 and 2017 seasons. He also added a Second Team Singles designation following the 2016 season where he went 19-2.

Fujitani was also presented with the Goucher College Coaches Award at the 2016-17 Awards Ceremony. The Coaches Award is presented to the student-athlete that most completely represented Goucher College throughout his/her athletic career.  Factors involved in the selection of the winner(s) include accomplishments at his or her sport or sports, including awards and honors garnered for his/her athletics ability, and displayed leadership skills toward his/her teammates. The 2017 graduate from Tokyo Japan was a member of a Goucher men's tennis team that won 57 matches in a four-year period - the most in school history. During his tenure he also won two Landmark Conference Championships, making two NCAA Men's Tennis Championship appearances and earned a berth to the second round during the 2016 season.

The Landmark Conference selects 20 senior scholar athletes each year to recognize the top student-athlete in each sport based on academics and athletics.

The honorees must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 and are selected by a committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors, faculty athletic representatives, senior woman administrators, and sports information directors. Chosen at the end of each sport season, the eight spring honorees will be announced over the next week.
