TOWSON, Md. – Junior defender, Drew Phillips (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.), was named to the 2016-17 All-Goucher Second Team by a panel of head coaches and athletic administrators, recognizing his efforts during the 2016 season.
Phillips was not only recognized by Goucher, but earned Landmark Conference Second Team honors in the fall. He is the 13th Goucher College men's soccer player to earn Landmark Conference honors since the conference's inception in the fall of 2007.
Primarily as a defensive player, Phillips scored two goals and notched an assist in 2016 for the Gophers who completed their year 6-7-5 overall and 1-4-2 in conference play. Both of Phillips' goals were game winners in 2016. The first came in a 1-0 win over Penn State-Harrisburg on September, 9th at home. Freshman Brandon Cohen (Redondo Beach, Calif.) dished the ball into the box on a corner kick in the 86th minute, finding Phillips who buried the shot in the back of the net, earning Goucher its second win of the young season.
One game later, Phillips added an assist to his stat sheet hitting senior Ryan Belluch (Reading, Pa.) late in the game (86th minute) to knot the match up, 1-1, at Rosemont. The game remained a stalemate, marking Goucher's second tie of the season.
Phillips' final goal of the year came on the road against Shenandoah on September 17th in a 3-2 win over the Hornets. Cohen drilled a pass to Phillips who settled the ball and curled it around the keeper in the 82nd minute to ensure the Gophers first road win of the season.
In addition to providing timely offense for the Gophers, Phillips was a leader on the Goucher back four that stifled many of the top attacking teams in the region. Head coach Bryan Laut stated, "It is tougher to find a player who cares as much as Drew but more importantly puts in all the work necessary to continue to grow as a player and person. This year Drew was a difference maker in every game leading our back four and allowing us to be more aggressive in the attack. I am excited for his continued growth and am positive he will take his game to another level next year!"
The All-Goucher Team is selected by a panel of athletic administrators and represents the 10 most distinguished student-athletes and most outstanding coach during an academic year. The All-Goucher team was established in 2010-11 and is selected annually.
From June 2nd, 2017 until June 16th, 2017 Goucher will unveil one new member of the 2016-17 All-Goucher Team every weekday at 2:30 p.m. For a complete list of last year's 2015-16 All-Goucher Team, click here.
