Goucher Athletics Announces All-Goucher First Team
BALTIMORE, Md. – The Goucher College Athletics Department has announced the 2018-19 All-Goucher first team. Julian Gonzalez (men's golf), Taylor Gunter (track and field), Cherise Madrid (equestrian), Tetsuya Ota (men's tennis) and Wren Wakeman (equestrian) have been named to the first team. In addition, Madrid has been named team captain and men's golf head coach Hunter Brown has been named the All-Goucher Team Coach of the Year.
Gonzalez had an impressive first year for the men's golf team including finishing in a tie for the low score at the Landmark Conference Championships with a two-round score of 145. The freshman finished second after losing a playoff to earn All-Landmark Conference first-team honors. Gonzalez was also named to the NCAA Division III PING All-Mid-Atlantic Region team and was the conference player of the week four times. The freshman finished in the Top-3 in five events and in the Top-10 in seven of the nine competitions. The freshman won back-to-back events in the fall with the Revolutionary Collegiate Classic and the Landmark Conference Preview seven days later. Gonzalez carded five rounds under par including a career-best 69 in the opening round at both the Don Scalf Invitational and the Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic and had eight rounds of par or below in his freshman campaign.
Gunter made the most of her final year at Goucher after winning the shot put at the Landmark Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships and the discus at the Landmark Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She also added a second-place finish in the weight throw at the indoor championships and a second-place standing in the shot put at the outdoor championships. She finished with two All-Landmark Conference first-team selections and two second-team honors in her senior campaign. She was also named the Landmark Conference Field Athlete of the Week in back-to-back weeks including posting a school-record toss in the discus. Gunter battled injuries to return to the Landmark Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. For the fourth time in program history, Goucher has had a rider be named a national champion. Madrid earned the honor in the individual walk trot to join an exclusive list of Goucher national champions. The junior qualified to for the IHSA National Championship after finishing at the IHSA Zone IV Reserve Champion in the walk trot. Madrid also won the walk trot at the IHSA Zone IV Region I Championships.
An equestrian rider has been named the captain or co-captain for the sixth-straight season after Joey Fink was named captain in both 2013-14 and 2014-2015 and then Cary Hundley was named co-captain in 2015-16 and captain in her final two seasons of 2016-17 and 2018-19. Men's lacrosse has had two players named captain, track and field had one runner and swimming and diving had a co-captain with Hundley in 2015-16.
Ota went 14-7 on the year and only lost eight games in seven matches in league play at No. 1 singles this season to be named the Landmark Conference Player of the Year and a spot on the all-conference first team in singles. The sophomore won his doubles match with Michael Herman 8-2 and his singles match 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles in the conference semifinals 5-0 win against Susquehanna University and then hit a return at 30-40 in his doubles match with Herman to earn an 8-6 win against the University of Scranton to give the Gophers a 2-1 edge after doubles on the way to a 5-1 victory in the championship game. Ota earns his second All-Goucher first-team selection and joins Christina Pevey from women's golf as the only student-athletes to earn the honor in the last two seasons.
Wakeman also performed well on the national stage at the IHSA National Championships with a fourth-place standing in the walk trot canter. It was the second time in her career that Wakeman participated in the national championships after the team advanced in her sophomore year. Wakeman advanced to the national championships after being named the IHSA Zone IV Zone Champion in the walk trot canter and she was also the IHSA Zone IV Region I Reserve Champion in the walk trot canter.
Brown has led the Gophers men's golf team to the conference championship and the NCAA Division III Championships in the program's first two seasons in program history. His 2019 team took a one-stroke lead after the first round with a 306 and then shot a 302 in the second round to card a 608 in the two rounds and win the event by 15 strokes. In the squad's inaugural season, Goucher also had a one-stroke edge after the first round with a score of 315 and then posted a 334 in the second round to win by three strokes.
Brown is the fourth head coach to be named the All-Goucher Coach of the Year twice (Patte Zumbrum [Equestrian], Jen Smith [Equestrian], Brendan Kincaid [men's tennis]) and the third coach to win it in back-to-back years (Smith, Kincaid).
The All-Goucher team is the 10 most distinguished student-athletes and most outstanding coach during an academic year selected by a committee. The All-Goucher team was established in 2010-11 and is selected annually. In its nine years, we have handed out 90 first and second team All-Goucher recognitions.
