CHESTER, Pa. – A five-minute sequence midway through the second half did in the Goucher field hockey team tonight, with Widener scoring the only two goals of the game in that span to end the Gopher's winning streak at three.
Goucher sees its record fall to 3-6, while the Pride (4-6) snapped a six-game losing streak with the win.
The Gophers' defense was under pressure throughout the night. Widener held a 5-1 shots advantage in the opening 35 minutes, and the Pride also led 7-1 in penalty corners, but Demie Huffman (Granville, Ohio/Granville) made three saves and Liz Weiner (New Bloomfield, Pa./West Perry) registered a defensive save to keep the game scoreless.
Emily Gill (White Hall, Md./North Harford) had what turned out to be Goucher's only shot of the contest off of a penalty corner from Antonia DiLuca (Ardmore, Pa./Friends Central) in the 16th minute, but her effort was turned away by Widener goalie Maggie Karmeris.
Widener kept up the pressure after the intermission, and the Pride were eventually rewarded with a goal in the 50th minute when Maddie Price tallied her first marker of the season. Mackenzie Lindquist doubled Widener's advantage five minutes later with a shot just inside the right post.
Huffman made two more saves in the second half, while DiLuca added her first defensive save of the season. Widener ended the game with a 12-1 disparity in shots.
Goucher will remain on the road this Friday night, when the Gophers travel to Scranton for a 7 p.m. matchup in their Landmark Conference opener. The Royals (8-1, 0-1 Landmark) lost their first game of 2013 against Juniata last Saturday.
