Huffman Earns Landmark's Weekly Defensive Honor
TOWSON, Md. — Goalkeeper Demie Huffman registered shutouts in each of Goucher’s two victories last week, including her first ever clean sheet of a Landmark opponent, and that performance was recognized this afternoon when she was named the Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week for October 20-26.
TOWSON, Md. — Goalkeeper Demie Huffman (Granville, Ohio/Granville) registered shutouts in each of Goucher's two victories last week, including her first ever clean sheet of a Landmark opponent, and that performance was recognized this afternoon when she was named the Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week for October 20-26.
Huffman's week began with two saves in the Gophers' 3-0 blanking of Notre Dame (Md.) on Tuesday. Goucher then faced off against regionally-ranked Juniata, which entered with an 11-3 record and a 7-0 lifetime mark against the Gophers. Those records took a hit after Huffman's seven-save effort allowed Goucher to eventually claim a 1-0 victory over the Eagles when Emily Jewell (San Diego, Calif./Scripps Ranch) fired in a double-overtime winner.
Of the six Landmark matches contested last week, no winning goalkeeper made more saves than Huffman in her victory over Juniata. That win was also the ninth of the season for the Gophers, clinching their first winning record since the 1995 campaign.
The shutouts were the fifth and sixth of Huffman's career, respectively. She becomes the seventh Goucher athlete to be recognized by the conference this fall, and the second from the field hockey program. Justine Ruhlin (Cornish, Maine/Sacopee Valley) earned Offensive Athlete of the Week accolades on Sept. 29. The last time a Gopher field hockey player received a defensive weekly award was back on Oct. 18, 2010.
Huffman now has a 9-6 record overall, with 69 total saves and a 1.48 goals-against average in 2014.
Goucher closes out its season this Saturday with a 1 p.m. matchup at Susquehanna.
