BALTIMORE, MD. - The Goucher field hockey team knew they had their hands full entering today’s game against first place Elizabethtown College (4-0 in the Landmark, 8-4 overall, entering the contest). But, this is nothing new to them as they battled fiercely in their previous game, losing 1-0, to the team in second place, Catholic University of America.
In a first half that saw both teams move the ball well but not penetrate deep into the offensive end, the Blue Jays struck first when they scored off of a penalty corner at the 17:08 mark. The goal was scored by senior Charity Good (Muncy, PA) and was assisted by junior Megan Eppley (Mechanicsburg, PA). The half ended with a 1-0 score in favor of the Blue Jays.
The one goal deficit remained for most of the second half. Goucher’s best opportunity to tie the game came when sophomore forward Maya Belin (Baltimore, MD) dribbled past two defenders and came in alone on the goalie. However, the Blue Jay goalie, sophomore Margo Donlin (Wilmington, DE) was up to the task and turned away Belin’s right-handed shot. Elizabethtown put the game out of reach with 31.9 seconds remaining when junior Emma Christman (Kimberton, PA) scored from the left side of the goal after a scramble in front of Goucher goalie Liz Zengel (Smithfield, VA). Zengel finished the game with ten saves as the Blue Jays outshot the Gophers 15-3.
The loss drops the Gophers Landmark Conference record to 2-3 and they are 7-7 overall. They are in fourth place behind the three teams they have lost to: Catholic. Elizabethtown and Susquehanna. The Gophers return to action one week from today when they host the University of Scranton for a 1:00 pm game on Beldon Field.
