BALTIMORE, MD. – Goucher’s field hockey program pushed its record to 5-4 Tuesday evening after a dominant 4-0 victory over the Hood College Blazers. The Gophers outshot the Blazers 27-1 and took 15 penalty corners compared to none for Hood.
The Gophers came out of the gate quickly as their first goal was scored 2:34 into the first half from first year Valerie Mendoza (San Diego, CA). Mendoza would find the back of the net again at 13:52 off an assist from junior Oliva Dickert (Montville, NJ) and senior Lizzie Barminski (Ventura CA). These scores were Mendoza’s second and third goals of the 2016 season. Additional Goucher goals came from junior Kristen Shklanko (Huntington Beach, CA) and sophomore Maya Belin (Baltimore, MD). Belin’s goal was assisted by senior Annie Carter (Ann Arbor, MI).
Taking advantage of a 4-0 halftime lead, Coach Megan Williams substituted freely and gave many of her younger players an opportunity to gain valuable game experience in the second half. The Gophers produced 10 second-half shots. The Gophers tested the Hood goalie, Haile Poisal, forcing her to make eight saves during the second half. The Gophers were not able to score, however.
The field hockey team’s next game is away at Susquehanna on October 1st at 1:00 pm.
