Sept. 4 – NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Goucher College field hockey team dropped a 4-0 decision to nationally ranked Christopher Newport University on Sunday afternoon.
The Captains, who were selected 14th in the National Field Hockey Coaches' Association Preseason Coaches' Poll, tallied a pair of goals in the first half. The first came just under nine minutes into the game on shot by Carol Thompson, while the second was put in by Rachael Allshouse with just under 10 minutes to go in the half.
Junior Liz Zengel faced 13 shots in the opening half, making seven saves. She finished with a career-high 11 on the day.
CNU would tack on two more goals in the second stanza, as Abby Cryts scored both markers for the Captains.
Seeing action in her first collegiate game, first-year goalie Megan Wells played the final ten minutes of action, stopping three shots.
Goucher will have a short turnaround for their next game, as they take on Randolph-Macon on Monday. The game will be held at the USA Field Hockey Training Center in Virginia Beach, and will start at 4 p.m.
