Gophers Are Held Scoreless at Stevenson in Defensive Battle
The Goucher College field hockey team (1-4, Landmark 0-0) was held scoreless by cross-town rival, Stevenson, on Thursday evening.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The Goucher College field hockey team (1-4, Landmark 0-0) was held scoreless by cross-town rival, Stevenson, on Thursday evening.
The Mustangs threatened early off a penalty corner, but the attempt was thwarted by senior goalkeeper, Liz Zengel (Smithfield, Va.) in the goal. Goucher answered with a penalty corner of their only minutes later, but it was unsuccessful following a shot by senior Emily Jewell (San Diego, Calif.)
Stevenson struck first with a goal in the 12th minute when Noel Martin buried a shot following a deflection off the penalty corner. The game remained 1-0 at the intermission.
The Mustangs doubled their advantage early in the second half when Sara McVey intercepted a pass and deposited a shot into the back of the cage. Stevenson placed two more shots on goal down the stretch, but neither team was able to score again.
The scoreboard read 2-0 in favor of the Mustangs at the end of 70 minutes.
Zengel played the entire game in goal for the Gophers, making six saves. Kelsey Eure earned a shutout at the other end of the field as Goucher put four shots on goal.
Stevenson held an advantage in penalty corners, 9-3.
The Gophers return to the field on Saturday, September 16th when they welcome Randolph Macon to Towson, Md. At 6 p.m.
