HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Goucher College field hockey team (2-5, Landmark 0-1) dropped its opening Landmark Conference matchup to Juniata on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles scored in the 70th minute to sneak by the Gophers following a penalty corner. Lindsay Scholten was awarded the goal for the win, while Katie Alexander and Meredith Shephard were credited with assists. Shephard sent the ball in on the penalty corner and Alexander dished it to the open Scholten.
The Eagles opened the game on the offensive, putting back-to-back shots on goal near the five-minute mark. However, junior keeper, Quichey Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) deflected the shots away to safety.
The Gophers were finally able to put a shot on goal when junior Maya Belin (Baltimore, Md.) shipped a shot in the 18th minute. However, the shot was saved by Juniata keeper, Kylie Edwards. Senior Emily Jewell (San Diego, Calif.) added another shot on goal for Goucher just minutes before the half.
The game remained tied, 0-0, heading into the intermission.
Belin wasted little time in the second half as she attacked the goal in the 41st and the 49th minutes. However, the Gophers never put another shot on goal in the game before allowing the goal to Scholten with time expired.
Johnson recorded two saves in the game while Edwards collected her second shutout of the year with four saves.
The Gophers are back on the field on Thursday when they travel to Immaculata to take on the Mighty Macs at 7 p.m.
