Riverhawks Best Gophers in OT, 3-2
Goucher College field hockey (3-6, Landmark 0-2) lost their second conference game in a row to Susquehanna University (5-5, Landmark 1-1) 3-2 in overtime on Saturday.
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher College field hockey (3-6, Landmark 0-2) lost their second conference game in a row to Susquehanna University (5-5, Landmark 1-1) 3-2 in overtime on Saturday.
The Riverhawks scored five minutes into the game against the Gophers. Senior Julia Hasircoglu brought the ball down the field and snapped off a quick shot and found the back of the cage to take the lead.
Sophomore Valerie Mendoza (San Diego, Ca.) tied it up for Goucher after she took the ball down the field, rifled off a shot, scooped up her rebound and finished to the right side of the goal. This is Mendoza's first goal of the season.
Ten minutes into the second half, junior Maya Belin (Baltimore, Md.) scored her
fourth goal of the season, after she carried the ball from outside the arc and snapped off a shot right in front of the goal.
The Riverhawks tied up the game after sophomore Hunter Pitman pushed the ball into the corner and found first-year Maddie Taylor who ripped a point-blank shot past the Goucher goalkeeper.
At the end of regulation, the Gophers and Riverhawks were tied 2-2.
With less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime period, Susquehanna's senior Cayla Spatz fired a shot from the top of the arc into the left side of the goal, sealing the victory for the Riverhawks.
Susquehanna's sophomore goalkeeper, Emily DiGaetano, saved 13 out of the 15 shots she faced. Junior Quichey Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) stopped two shots on goal in for the Gophers in 83 minutes of play.
Goucher's next game is on Beldon Field next Saturday at 1 p.m. against Moravian College.
