Gophers Clipped At The End By Undefeated Royals
The Goucher College field hockey program (4-9, Landmark 1-5) lost to the undefeated and first-place Scranton Royals (15-0, Landmark 6-0) down to the wire in a tight 3-2 loss.
SCRANTON, Pa. - The Goucher College field hockey program (4-9, Landmark 1-5) lost to the undefeated and first-place Scranton Royals (15-0, Landmark 6-0) down to the wire in a tight 3-2 loss.
After going down 1-0 after just 1:10 minutes of play on a goal from Scranton's Meredith Campbell, the Gophers responded with a goal from junior Maya Belin (Baltimore, Md.) at 27:41 in the first half to knot the score at 1-1. Campbell tallied again, unassisted, at 31:46 to put the Royals up 2-1 heading into halftime.
Senior Kristen Shklanko (Huntington Beach, Ca.) tallied Goucher's second goal 48 seconds into the second half which forced a 2-2 stalemate until the final minutes of the game. For the majority of the second period, the Gophers controlled play, as they fired seven total shots, five of which were on net. Unfortunately, it was Campbell who scored again, her third on the day, in the last three minutes of the game (67:15) to allow the Royals to remain undefeated in the conference and overall.
Goucher outshot Scranton 10-5. Penalty corners were even at six apiece. Goucher's sophomore goalkeeper Meg Wells (Wilbraham, Ma.) held steady between the posts for Goucher with two saves on the day.
Head Coach Megan Williams had this to say afterward: "It was a really great performance against an undefeated team on the road. I am proud of these young ladies. We played well enough to earn a playoff spot today had the chips fallen differently for us".
The Gophers finish their Landmark Conference season on Saturday, October 28th when they take on Drew University at 1:00 pm on Beldon Field.
