ST. MARY'S, Md. - A goal in the 60th minute by junior Valerie Mendoza (San Diego, Calif) eventually sent the game to overtime, but host St. Mary's (Md.) tallied the game-winner in the extra frame to defeat the Goucher College field hockey team, 2-1, on Friday afternoon.
The game was the 2018 season opener for both teams and was also the Goucher head coaching debut for Stacey Eversley.
In the opening frame of the contest, St. Mary's held a 10-5 edge on shots over Goucher, as the game remained scoreless into intermission. In the opening half, Goucher first-year goalie Devin Brashear (Escondido, Calif.) made five saves in her first collegiate half to keep the host Seahawks off the board.
To open the second half, St. Mary's finally cracked the scoreless tie with a goal in the 47th minute, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead on the Gophers. Over the next few minutes, St. Mary's looked to go up for good, but Brashear made six saves in a 10-minute span to keep St. Mary's off the board
With under 10 minutes left, Mendoza finally put Goucher on the board, as her unassisted goal in the 60th minute knotted things up at 1-1. The shot, which was just the second of the half for the Gophers, was the seventh of the junior's career to date.
Over the final nine minutes of regulation, Brashear continued to be dominant in between the pipes, making four saves to send the match to extra time. But there, St. Mary's finally broke through (after Brashear made two more saves) five minutes in to win the match, 2-1.
Overall, St. Mary's held a wide 33-7 edge on shots. Brashear was dazzling in her first collegiate match, posting 19 total saves (5 in the first half, 13 in the second, and three in overtime), senior Sam Klock (Ashburn, Va.) and first-year Hannah Washburn (Pittsford, N.Y.) each had a defensive save in the defeat.
The Goucher College field hockey team returns to action on Tuesday, as they host Eastern Mennonite in their 2018 home opener at Beldon Field. Action gets underway at 7 p.m.
