TOWSON, Md. - Junior Valerie Mendoza (San Diego, Calif.) and senior Jackie Juarez (Glendora, Calif.) scored goals in the second half, lifting the Goucher College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Ferrum on Sunday at a wet, windy Beldon Field.
With the win, Goucher evened their record on the year to 2-2, while Ferrum fell to 0-4 with the defeat.
From the start of the match, Goucher controlled play. In the opening frame, the Gophers outshot Ferrum, 6-1, but was unable to score a goal in the first 35 minutes, as the match went into halftime scoreless.
Within a few minutes in the second half, Goucher cracked the scoreless tie.
In the 41st minute, Mendoza found the back of the cage on a strike from just inside the scoring area. The goal, which was the second of the year for Mendoza, gave Goucher a 1-0 lead.
Later in the 54th minute, Goucher scored again to essentially put the game out of Ferrum's reach.
On the play, senior Maya Belin (Baltimore, Md.) found Juarez right near the net, where Juarez finished the scoring chance to give the Gophers a 2-0 lead. For Juarez, it was her second goal of the season, while Belin notched her third assist in the last two matches for Goucher on the play.
From there, Goucher continued to dominate play. Very late in the contest, however, Ferrum was awarded a penalty stroke, which they converted on, slicing the Goucher lead in half with 33 seconds left.
But, it was too little, too late for Ferrum, as the Gophers kept the ball at midfield for the remainder of regulation to clinch their second straight win.
Overall, Goucher dominated the stat sheet in the victory. They outshot Ferrum by a wide 19-3 margin while holding a 16-3 edge on penalty corners. First-year Devin Brashear (Escondido, Calif.) earned the win in net for Goucher, making one save on the afternoon.
The Goucher College field hockey team returns to action on Wednesday, as they travel to Lebanon Valley for a match that starts at 7 p.m.
