Déjà Vu All Over Again: Goucher Field Hockey Wins Second Match Of The Weekend By 8-0 Score
FERRUM, Va. – Mia Wiggins (San Diego, Calif./University City) had a career afternoon to power Goucher College to an 8-0 win for the second-straight day in a road victory against Ferrum College in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday.
The Gophers started the weekend with an 8-0 win against Southern Virginia University on Saturday at Beldon Field and Wiggins a tally in that game. The sophomore powered the win on Sunday with a career-high two goals and three assists. Wiggins helped started the afternoon offensive onslaught with two tallies and a helper in the first 18 minutes of the game.
Danielle Johnson (Salisbury, Md./Parkside), who registered her first career hat trick on Saturday, along with Ari Hooper (San Diego, Calif./Poway) each added two goals and an assist while Caroline Doll and Alexyss Pawlak (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) also found the twine. It was Pawlak's first career score.
Wiggins got the scoring started with an unassisted tally at the 8:30 mark. She then setup Hooper, the current Landmark Conference Offensive Player of the Week, four minutes and 45 seconds later before Wiggins notched her first multi-goal performance with an unassisted tally at 17:49 for a 3-0 lead.
Doll found the cage for the first time this season and the third time in her career off a feed from Hooper at 21:51 to give Goucher a 4-0 lead going into the intermission.
After Johnson scored unassisted at 31:20, Wiggins setup Pawlak's first career goal four minutes and 28 seconds later for a 6-0 lead.
A Hooper from Johnson connection at 47:30 and a Wiggins to Johnson at 50:59 in the fourth quarter wrapped up the team's second-straight 8-0 victory. The Gophers have outscored its opponent 9-1 in the final frame.
For the second-straight day netminder Devin Brashear (Encondido, Calif./San Pasqual) earned the win despite not facing a shot in the first 45 minutes of the game.
Goucher, who is 3-1 for the first time since 2014 and the fourth time since joining the Landmark Conference, continues its Old Dominion Athletic Conference tour on Saturday at Randolph-Macon. Game time is 2 p.m.
