- BALTIMORE, Md. – Danielle Johnson (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) scored the decisive goal to reel in a Goucher College 3-2 victory against Virginia Wesleyan in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday.
Johnson broke a 2-all standstill after the Marlins tied the game with a tally at 32:22 when she found the back of the cage off a Mia Wiggins (San Diego, Calif./Poway) assist two minutes and 52 seconds later for the game-winning goal. The senior also added an assist on the Gophers second goal of the night.
Johnson continues her stellar senior season with a team-best seven goals and three assists for 17 points and now has eight markers and four helpers for 20 points in her last two seasons and her career.
"I am so proud of the girls," said head coach Stacey Eversley. "They played great and really took what they learned in practice and applied it to this game. They earned this win!"
Emily Postlethwait notched her first collegiate goal off an Ari Hooper (San Diego, Calif./Poway) assist at 5:18 before Mickey Nelson (Frederick, Md./Urbana) added her second career score off a Johnson feeder at 11:49 for a quick 2-0 lead.
Devin Brashear (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) made three saves in the winning effort.
The game also marked the first time both teams scored in a game after the first five contests all ended in a shutout. The squad improved to 3-1 at Beldon Field including three-straight wins in Baltimore and 2-1 against the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
Goucher returns to action on Saturday at home against Lebanon Valley. Match time is 12 p.m.
