HARRISONBURG, Va. – Ari Hooper (San Diego, Calif./Poway) and Meghan Oakes (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay) powered Goucher College past Eastern Mennonite University 2-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday.
Oakes scored the decisive goal off a pass from Hooper with 50:48 left on the clock to break a 1-all standstill. After Oakes' tally, the Royals had four shots blocked by the Gopher defense in the final nine minutes and 12 seconds of the match to secure the victory.
Oakes notched her fourth goal of the season and first since she had a hat trick against Southern Virginia on September 7. She ranks fourth on the team with four markers and an assist for nine points. The senior now has 12 goals and three assists for 27 points in her career.
Along with her assist on the game-winner, Hooper tied the game at 1 with her sixth tally of the season at the 13:36 mark. The junior has registered a point in all five of Goucher's wins and is tied with Danielle Johnson (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) with 17 points thanks to six markers and a team-high five assists for 17 points. Hooper now has nine goals and nine assists for 27 points in her career.
Devin Brashear (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) made six saves in the win.
The Gophers played four Old Dominion Athletic Conference teams in the last five matches and finished 3-1 against the Virginia conference.
Goucher now turns its attention to conference play when it opens league action at home against Drew University on Saturday. Match time is 1 p.m.
