Goucher Field Hockey Sees Moravian Spoil Senior Day In Double-Overtime Thriller
BALTIMORE, Md. – Goucher College ends the season with an double-overtime loss to Moravian College in Landmark Conference field hockey action on Saturday.
Mia Wiggins (San Diego, Calif./University City) and Hannah Washburn (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) both took feeds from a pair of Gophers seniors to help the team jump out to a 2-0 lead. Wiggins found the back of the cage off a Danielle Johnson (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) assist 97 seconds into the contest while Washburn increased the lead off a pass from Meghan Oakes (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay) at 20:27.
Prior to the game, Goucher honored Johnson, Oakes, Nolwenn Daniels (Newark, Del./Hodgson Co-Tech), Alexyss Pawlak (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) and Madi Resolme (San Diego, Calif./De Norte) for their hard work and dedication to the college and the field hockey program the last four years.
Johnson appeared in 59 games including 34 starts and recorded 10 goals and six assists for 26 points all in the last two seasons. This season she ranks second on the team with nine goals and five assists for 23 points and was named the Landmark Conference Field Hockey Athlete of the Week earlier this year.
Oakes appeared in 54 games including 37 starts and has 13 goals and five assists for 31 points in her career. This season she had a career-high five goals and three assists for 13 points including a hat trick against Southern Virginia earlier this year.
Resolme played in 63 games including 36 starts and had a goal and three assists for five points in her career. She registered a goal against Moravian as a sophomore and dished out an assist in each of her final three seasons. Pawlak appeared in 48 games with 29 starts and notched her first collegiate goal against Ferrum earlier this year while Daniels appeared in 28 games including four starts in her career and she registered her first career point on an assist against Transylvania earlier this year.
Wiggins notched her seventh goal of the season and finished the season ranked third with seven goals and five assists for 19 points. The goal was Washburn's first collegiate goal and she finished with a goal and an assist for three points on the year.
Devin Brashear (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) made seven saves in 74:38 minutes of action.
This is the second-straight year Goucher and Moravian have met on senior day, but this time the game was in Baltimore instead of Allentown. The match played out similarly to the one last year with the Gophers jumping out to a 2-0 lead and the Greyhounds coming back to tie the match at 2 late in the second half. Goucher spoiled Moravian's senior day in 2018 by earning the win in overtime while Moravian returned the favor this year with the decisive tally in double overtime.
Goucher finished the season 7-10 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
