TOWSON, Md. - Sophomore Julia Blondell scored her first career goal, while two other Goucher College field hockey players scored their first goal of the season, as the Gophers won their third straight game, defeating Southern Virginia University 3-0 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Beldon Field in the Gophers' home opener.
Goucher (3-1) got on the board 6:45 into the game as Blondell scored on a feed from senior Kaitlyn Bucci to make it 1-0. Less than a minute into the second quarter, sophomore Angelena Holmes recorded her first goal of the season, an unassisted tally, to make it 2-0.
Midway through the third period, sophomore Madison Usher made it 3-0 when she put home a pass from Bucci, who recorded her second assist of the contest. It was also Usher's first goal of 2024.
Goucher outshot SVU (0-2) 13-2. Knight goalie Paola Nunez made a pair of saves, while Goucher's Katie Bloom and Mimi Taff each saw 30 minutes of action and were not forced to make a save. The Gophers did have one team save. Southern Virginia held a 7-5 lead in penalty corners.
Bucci led Goucher with four shots.
Goucher continues its three-game homestand Wednesday night, entertaining Lancaster Bible in a 7 pm contest at Beldon Field.
