KINGS POINT, N.Y. – Only problem for Goucher tonight after
the Gophers overcame a seven-point deficit with 2:42 remaining by
quickly collecting eight unanswered points and going ahead on a
three-point basket by Darrin Boswell (Nottingham,
Md./Joppatowne) is that there were still :56 showing on
the clock.
Merchant Marine regained the lead on a lay-up by Ryan Samuel
before a Goucher player missed two free throws with :13 left to
play. The Gophers got off two more shots – the first of which
would have put them ahead and the second at the buzzer which would
have sent the game into overtime – but when neither went in,
the Mariners had achieved a 56-53 Landmark Conference victory.
Miguel Negron (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) led
Goucher's late charge. His basket with 2:36 remaining knocked the
Mariners' advantage down to 52-47. After a defensive stop, the
senior guard was fouled while making a lay-up and completed the
three-point play. Following another stop, Negron picked up an
assist on Boswell's three-pointer that put the Gophers (2-9, 0-2
Landmark) in the lead, 53-52, with less than a minute remaining.
Boswell was the leading scorer for the Gophers for the seventh consecutive game as he finished with 15 points.
After spotting the Mariners (5-6, 2-0 Landmark) an early 7-0 advantage, the Gophers spent the entire first half trying to catch up, but still trailed, 25-19, at the break. It wasn't until a basket by Reginald Suggs (Baltimore, Md./Walbrook) midway through the second half that Goucher went ahead for the first time.
A little over five minutes after the basket by Suggs provided the Gophers (2-9, 0-2 Landmark) with a 37-36 lead, Merchant Marine's Pat Grace landed a shot from three-point range that not only created a 43-43 tie, but also a run of nine unanswered points that allowed the Mariners to pull in front 49-43 with 3:35 left to play.
Merchant Marine's Tom Izzo led all scorers as he contributed 18 points to the win that provided the Mariners with a 3-2 lead in the all-time series between the two schools.
