BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Although Goucher never held the lead during the second half of this afternoon's Landmark Conference game against Moravian, the Gophers appeared to be within striking distance with eight minutes left to play and down by just 12 points. But that's precisely when the Greyhounds went on a 14-2 run that provided them with a commanding 24-point advantage and resulted in a 91-68 victory.
The two teams, which were playing for the ninth time in a series that stood at four wins apiece, were never separated by more than five points at any point during the first half. In addition, the score was tied on seven separate occasions and the lead changed hands no fewer than 11 times.
The Greyhounds (6-7, 2-1 Landmark) went ahead to stay on a 3-point basket by Jeff Cullinan that made the score 35-34 with 35 seconds remaining before halftime. Cullinan tacked on two free throws with :07 showing on the clock as the Gophers (3-10, 0-3 Landmark) headed for the locker room at the break trailing 37-34.
Richard Harris (Clinton, Md./Surrattsville), who captured scoring honors for Goucher by knocking down a career-high 21 points, supplied the Gophers with their first points of the second half when he nailed a 3-point attempt after just 57 seconds had run off the clock. Just over two minutes later, Marcus Cotton (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) drained a 3-pointer, slicing what had been a six-point advantage for Moravian in half.
It wasn't until D.J. Strayhorn made two free throws with 13:59 left to play that the Greyhounds enjoyed their first double-digit cushion of the contest. The lead surpassed 20 points for the first time on a layup by Izel Dickerson that made the score 80-59 with just under five minutes still remaining.
Strayhorn led all scorers as he contributed 24 points to the victory. Cameron Cullen and Garrett Johnson both came off the bench to score 13 points for Moravian.
Cotton and Manney Wood (Washington, D.C./C. H. Flowers) both backed up Harris' 21-point effort with 11 points apiece.
The Greyhounds out-rebounded the Gophers, 51-32.
