Butler's Late Game Heroics Lifts Gophers Over Stevenson, 65-64

Butler's Late Game Heroics Lifts Gophers Over Stevenson, 65-64

TOWSON, MD – Freshman Keon Butler laid in a bucket with 6.2 seconds left in the game to lift the Goucher men's basketball team (3-7, 0-1 Landmark) over Stevenson, 65-64, Saturday afternoon in the Decker Sports & Recreation Center. Butler finished the game with six points.

 

Senior Chris Outing and junior Elliot Wiley led the Gophers with 16 points each. Outing and Butler cleaned up the boards for Goucher with seven rebounds each. Four of Bulter's seven rebounds came on the offensive side of the court.

 

The Mustangs (1-8, 0-4 MAC) were paced by junior Tim McNeal with 15 points, coming off the bench. Junior Christian Collins led SU with a game-high eight rebounds.

 

Senior Tre Galloway III notched a game-high seven assists for the Gophers, to go along with three steals and six points. Freshman Dwayne Morton chalked up eight points and three assists in the matchup.

 

How it happened:

  • Goucher jumped out to an early 9-3 lead in the first four minutes. 
  • Stevenson carried a 16-3 run over seven minutes to earn a 19-12 lead with 8:56 to go in the first half.
  • The Gophers rallied back to a 33-28 deficit to close the first half.
  • Goucher opened the second half on a 10-3 run to earn a 38-36 lead.
  • Stevenson fought back to earn a 62-56 lead, before relinquishing the game to the Gophers on Butler's lay-in with 6.2 seconds left on the clock.
  • Goucher edged the Mustangs in free throw percentage 88.2% (15-of-17) to 70.6% (12-of-17).
  • The Gophers held Stevenson to 23.5% (4-of-17) 3PT shooting from behind the arc.
  • Goucher surpassed the Mustanges 37-31 in the second half, ending the game on a 13-4 run.
  • Stevenson outshot the Gophers 40.7% (24-of-59) to 37.9% (22-of-58) from the field.

 

Coaches Thought:

  • "I'm proud of our effort and how we battled in the second half, especially the last 4 minutes when we went on the 13-4 run to finish the game.   We made that run because we took care of the ball, made our lay-ups, free throws and defended.   I am also really proud of the composure of our team to execute our last possession is great to build our confidence."

Up Next:

The Gophers return to action on Tuesday December 20th when they travel to Miami, FL to take on Alvernia University in a non-conference matchup at 6PM in the 2016 Miami Holiday Slam. Goucher and Alvernia have not squared off since the 1996-97 season when the Crusaders topped the Gophers 60-55.
