Goucher Men's Basketball Falls To Catholic To End Three-Game Road Trip, 67-59
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Dwayne Morton (Baltimore, Md./Waynesville [Mo.]) will return to the Decker Sports and Recreation Center for a two-game homestand needing seven points to become the 10th player in program history with 1,000 points after notching 10 points in a 67-59 loss to Catholic University of America in Landmark Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday.
Morton made four shots from the floor including a pair from behind the arc to finish with 10 points. The senior will become the first Gopher to reach the grand mark under head coach Tom Rose and the first since the 2006-07 season when Pierre Jones and James Russo both hit the grand mark. Morton, who has scored double figures 12 times in his senior campaign and 47 in his career, added five rebounds and two assists against the Cardinals. He has registered at least five rebounds in three-straight games and 10 times in 2019-20.
Cam Isaacs (Randallstown, Md./Randallstown) paced the team with 11 points. The sophomore has registered double figures in points in eight of his last 10 games and is averaging 12.8 points per game in that span. He has 12 double-digit contests as a sophomore and 22 in his career.
Morton scored five fast points in the first five minutes of the game to help Goucher jump out to an 11-5 lead. Catholic came back to tie the game at 16 with 12 minutes to play in the first half. There would be two ties and each time would take the lead twice over the next nine minutes. After Isaacs' hit a trey to give the Gophers the lead for the final time on a triple with 4:34 left for a 25-24 edge, the Cardinals closed the opening half on a 10-3 run to take a 35-28 advantage going into the locker room.
Trailing 42-30 with 17:47 left, Goucher went on a 17-8 run to cut the margin to 50-47 with 6:59 on the clock. Darrell Collins (Baltimore, Md./Newtown) posted seven of his eight points in the game while Isaacs added six points in the spurt. Catholic then scored eight of the next 10 points while the Gophers could get no closer than four points the rest of the way in a 67-59 Cardinal win.
Pat Goralski (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) added nine points, four rebounds and three assists while Josh Lichti (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisburg) chipped in eight points.
Goucher returns to action on Saturday at home against Susquehanna University. Game time is 2 p.m.
