Sept. 8 – TOWSON, Md. – The Goucher College Department of Athletics, and Director of Athletics Geoff Miller, are pleased to announce the addition Hunter Brown as the inaugural head coach of the new Gopher men's and women's golf teams.
The department was looking for the right person to usher in a new era for Goucher Athletics, and, after a national search, Miller says they have found that person in the form of Brown.
"I don't think we could have found a more thoughtful, driven or passionate individual to be the first golf coach in our athletic department's history," said Miller.
"He is committed to being a life-shaping influence on the lives of the student-athletes he recruits and mentors here at Goucher. We are excited to witness him build both of these intercollegiate programs."
A Division I athlete at The University of Texas at Arlington, Brown was a member of two NCAA regional qualifying teams, as well as the 2011 Southland Conference Championship squad. He earned All-Conference honors, three times, and was named a DI Scholar All-American, twice.
"I'm really excited to get to be back working on the collegiate level," Brown said of his opportunity to work at Goucher. "I think it is a really special opportunity to get to establish the culture and framework of a brand new program. Any time you get to be the first of something, it's a great honor."
Professionally, Brown has competed on various mini-tours and most notably was a Monday qualifier for the 2014 PGA Tour Valero Texas Open. He looks forward to utilizing the insights learned from these competitive experiences as he works with his incoming players.
"My hope is to get a team of well-rounded individuals that sort of mirror the Goucher campus, while bringing something new to the table," he said. "The College as a whole just has a really great energy and I'm excited to get to add another layer to the diversity that is already in place."
The teams will begin competing in 2017-18, which will also be the first season sponsored by the Landmark Conference at the conference level.
"I believe that we have a really great opportunity to be able to compete right out of the gate," commented Brown. "We want to be able to shape the culture early by finding individuals that are high-character athletes, as well as being highly motivated."
When the golf teams do take shape under the direction of Brown, they will have the opportunity to play at the historic Hillendale Country Club, which will serve as the school's home course when competition begins.
"It's an exciting opportunity for both the players, as well as myself, to be able to have a course like Hillendale as a resource for us," said Brown. "Wonderful practice facilities, as well as a challenging home course, will really help in recruiting and development of our future athletes."
"I'm very thankful to Geoff and the entire staff at Goucher for being so attentive and thoughtful throughout the hiring process," stated Brown. "I am excited to join the athletics family and Goucher community, and I look forward to starting to write the history of Gopher Golf."
