ELKTON, Md. - The Goucher men's golf program earned its first tournament victory ever in its short history by shooting the lowest team score at the Revolutionary Collegiate Classic hosted by Ursinus College and held in Elkton, Maryland.
The Gopher's led the field after day a one and posted a strong finish on day two to edge out Stevens Tech by 7 strokes. Head Coach Hunter Brown was understandably pleased with the win and said that "this was definitely a special weekend for the program. These guys accomplished something really incredible this weekend and showed maturity and competitiveness far beyond their young careers. It was a lot of fun to watch them get this win."
First-year Roberto Mikse (Fort Worth, Tx) led the Gophers with scores of 70-75 which also earned him individual champion honors. Mikse's first round of 70 was the first under par round for the Gophers since they began competing in September. All 5 Gophers contributed to the tournament win: Evan Yue (Beijing, China) finished 4th individually with a score of 74-76, Wade Howard (Weston Fl.) 77-79 (tied for 11th), Logan Smith (Dallas, Tx.) 75-83 (tied for12th), and Joe Burns (Kinnelon, N.J.) 80-80 (tied for 14th). "Everyone contributed to this win and that makes it truly a team accomplishment" observed Brown. "Roberto's individual victory was a phenomenal performance. He competed hard and managed the pressure of a final round impressively," Brown added.
Steph Lee (Manalapan, N.J.) also had a notable finish performing as an individual, and not in the team scoring, as he posted a 78-72 and ended up in a tie for 4th.
The Gophers tee it up again next week in pursuit of a second title at their first-ever home event, The Goucher Fall Invitational, hosted at the Hillendale Country Club.
