The Goucher College men's golf team will join 41 of the best programs in all of NCAA Division III this week at the 2018 Championships, which are being held at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro, N.C. beginning on Tuesday.
The event, which runs through Friday, is being hosted by Guilford College and the Greensboro Sports Commission, will also feature a total of 216 participants.
The Gophers will begin play in the NCAA Championships on Tuesday afternoon when the team tees off on the Grandover Resort East Course beginning at Noon. On Wednesday, Goucher begins teeing off at 7:30 a.m. on the West Course.
Live stats throughout the competition this week in Greensboro will be posted here.
Goucher enters the event as the automatic qualifier from the Landmark Conference, as the Gophers won the inaugural Landmark Conference Championship on May 6th at Glenmaura National Golf Club in Moosic, Pa. with a two-day score of 649 (315-334) to earn a spot into the field.
Led by Landmark Conference Coach of the Year Hunter Brown, the Gophers accomplished the feat as a first-year program, starting five first-year student-athletes in the lineup.
Leading the group into the NCAA Championships are Steph Lee (Manalapan, N.J.) and Roberto Mikse (Fort Worth, Texas), who both earned All-Landmark Conference First Team accolades for their performance at the Landmark Championship. Lee finished third in the tournament, while Mikse was not far behind in a tie for fifth.
For the year, Mikse has led the team in scoring average at 79.14, with teammate Evan Yue (Beijing, China) in second at 79.79 (Yue was also an All-Landmark Conference Second Team selection). Lee, meanwhile, has registered the lowest round on the year for the Gophers, as he fired a one-under round of 70 on April 22nd at Glenmaura as part of the Glenmaura National Invitational.
All 42 teams and 216 individuals will play the first two rounds of competition on Tuesday and Wednesday on Grandover's East and West courses. After Wednesday's second round, the field is cut to the top-18 teams and five low individuals, not from the advancing schools.
More information and full recaps of how the Gophers did each day at the NCAA Championships will be posted at athletics.goucher.edu throughout the week. Updates will also be posted to Goucher's official Twitter account @GoucherSports, as well.
