RISING SUN, Md. - After knocking on the door in the first two events of his collegiate career, first-year Julian Gonzalez (Heredia, Costa Rica) of the Goucher College men's golf team won his first individual tournament on Sunday, taking top honors as the Gophers played in the 2018 Revolutionary Collegiate Classic par 72 Chesapeake Bay Golf Club over the last two days.
As a team, Goucher finished third overall in a field filled with both Division II and III institutions. In the two-day event, the Gophers finished with a score of 613, falling just behind team medalist Millersville (593) and runners-up Franklin & Marshall (594),
Gonzalez, meanwhile, captured the top spot on the individual leaderboard, finishing with a two-day score of 142 (72-70) to finish two-under for the tournament. Gonzalez actually finished in a tie for the top spot on the leaderboard overall with F&M's Jared Berlin, but Gonzalez was awarded the tournament title via a better score on the back nine of today's final round.
Gonzalez has now finished in the top three in the first three tournaments of his collegiate career, placing in a tie for second last weekend at the McDaniel Fall Classic and a third at the North Carolina Wesleyan Invitational late last month.
Elsewhere, sophomore Roberto Mikse (Fort Worth, Texas) registered a top 20 finish, ending the event with a combined score of 157 (77-80), while first-year Nicholas Fisher (Fishers, Ind.) placed in a tie for 22nd with a two-day score of 162 (78-84). Rounding out the top finishers for the Gophers was sophomore Steph Lee (Manalapan, N.J.), who finished in a tie for 27th (83-82: 165)
The Goucher College men's golf team returns to action on Saturday, as they conclude the Fall portion of their 2018-19 slate by traveling to the Hershey Country Club for the Landmark Conference Fall Preview tournament. Action concludes on Sunday.
